Swansboro Rotary Club King Mackerel Blue Water Tournament became one of its most significant fundraising events. In its first years, the tournament was worth less than $10,000. It had less 100 participants. Lee Moore was appointed master of ceremonies and the prize purse surpassed $100,000 by 1988. In addition to attracting more fishing enthusiasts, the tournament was also one of the first to be on the Southern Kingfish Association's circuit.
